Trastorno degenerativo y progresivo del sistema nervioso, de evoluci\u00f3n lenta, caracterizado por temblor cuando los m\u00fasculos est\u00e1n en reposo, lentitud de los movimientos voluntarios y un tono muscular aumentado (rigidez). Afecta aproximadamente a una de cada 250 personas de m\u00e1s de 40 a\u00f1os y a una de cada 100 de m\u00e1s de 65 a\u00f1os. En estos enfermos hay bajos niveles o carencia de un neurotransmisor en los ganglios basales del cerebro, la dopamina. Su efecto general es intensificar las se\u00f1ales nerviosas hacia los m\u00fasculos. En esta dolencia, las c\u00e9lulas nerviosas de una zona de los ganglios basales (denominada sustancia nigra) se degeneran, disminuyendo la producci\u00f3n de dopamina y el n\u00famero de conexiones entre las c\u00e9lulas nerviosa de los ganglios basales. Como consecuencia, los ganglios basales no pueden suavizar los movimientos -como lo hacen normalmente- lo que provoca el temblor, la descoordinaci\u00f3n y un movimiento reducido y demorado. La par\u00e1lisis agitante que caracteriza a esta enfermedad se la trata con drogas paliativas a base de precursores y agonistas de la dopamina, adem\u00e1s de otros tipos de drogas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p
