Por 1957 el estadounidense Eugene Goldwasser afirm\u00f3 que la s\u00edntesis de la eritropoyetina se produc\u00eda en el ri\u00f1\u00f3n y que regulaba la relaci\u00f3n entre el suministro y el consumo de ox\u00edgeno en nuestro cuerpo. No ser\u00eda hasta 1983 cuando un hemat\u00f3logo nacido en Taiw\u00e1n, Fu-Kuen Lin, identificase el gen que codifica la epo humana. En un par de a\u00f1os consigui\u00f3 dar con la clonaci\u00f3n y expresi\u00f3n de dicho gen en la bacteria Escherichia coli, y posteriormente hizo lo propio sobre c\u00e9lulas de mam\u00edferos. A partir de aqu\u00ed, se trat\u00f3 de un juego de ni\u00f1os crear la llamada epo recombinante humana, o, simplemente, epo. Esta se usar\u00eda en pacientes con anemias severas, aprob\u00e1ndose esta posibilidad por la FDA en 1989. Las sospechas cuentan que para ese momento su potencial en el deporte de alta competici\u00f3n ya hab\u00eda sido testado. A partir de entonces, y de manera paulatina, la epo se fue haciendo m\u00e1s y m\u00e1s frecuente, hasta convertirse en una aut\u00e9ntica plaga en r\u00e9cords y marcas. \u00bfQu\u00e9 hace la epo con la sangre? Aumenta el porcentaje de gl\u00f3bulos rojos. \u00bfConsecuencia? El plasma se espesa tanto que, a veces, no puede pasar por las arterias y se forma un co\u00e1gulo, el cual no avanza y puede provocar una trombosis. En casos extremos puede sobrevenir la consecuencia fatal. O, dicho de otra forma, el deportista que se la juega con la epo no solamente est\u00e1 haciendo trampas, sino poniendo en serio peligro su vida. Con una particularidad: quien m\u00e1s arriesgue, quien m\u00e1s alto lleve su l\u00edmite, mejores resultados obtendr\u00e1&#8230;, pero tambi\u00e9n estar\u00e1 m\u00e1s expuesto a un accidente cardiovascular. Historias que hablan de tipos levant\u00e1ndose en mitad de la noche para hacer abdominales, para correr por los pasillos de un hotel con el objetivo de activar el riego a fin de evitar que con el descanso la sangre se solidifique en las arterias. Compa\u00f1eros inertes, pinchazos de madrugada, intervenciones fulgurantes de m\u00e9dicos que han de inyectar suero para deshacer ese fango que les corre por las venas. Durante los Juegos Ol\u00edmpicos de invierno que se celebraron en Calgary en 1988, la epo circul\u00f3 de forma secreta, casi clandestina.
